The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) 2018 was held in Houston, Texas. I was there and on a cloudy Saturday morning I was up bright and early. Anne Goudvis and Stephanie Harvey were leading a session on inquiry. It was of no consequence to me that it was 8:00 AM on the weekend. I packed my breakfast and coffee so I could be front and center.
Fast forward a few months and their book, which they co-authored with Brad Buhrow, and shared at NCTE, was finally released. It is a beautiful text chock-full of photos of engaged students working away at inquiry projects, brightly colored student work, instructional plans for strategies, QR codes for video clips and pages aplenty of charts brimming with frameworks for all types of inquiry.
It is perfectly organized for a quick scan of the book. You’ll want to quickly flip through pages for a preview and then settle in for a close reading. What a fabulous resource for setting up Inquiry Workshop! We’ve worked as educators over the years to perfect Readers/Writers Workshop and now we can jump headlong into facilitating time, resources and support for kids to satisfy their wonderings and hone their research skills through a framework for inquiry.
